The sound of a hundred hands on goatskins thunder in a circle, round a dancer, his heart beats faster and stronger with every twist and leap of the body. Round and round the fire, burning with vision. Down the hollowed tree trunk of the djembe drum. The message comes. Hail the trees that has laid themselves down for our pleasure, the ones far older than our body and soul who grows and fall for our dance and song. Have we ever thought about the forests being destroyed for our enlightenment, teambuilding, unity and healing. Something has to be done!!!!!!! I am now playing African drums and indigenous instruments for my twelfth year. In Zambia I learned to carve drums and was guided to make countless other instruments to entertain and inspire. Since 2001 I have been doing inspirational drum journeys for high flying corporate people and institutions to down and out orphans and the terminally ill, restoring unity, life and joy to the best of my ability Now the time has come to relieve the pain that drum making has had on the planet and find an alternative to destroying forests .The vision round the fire pushed me to seek and find this drum that can save trees and forests, yet, continue on its musical journey. The urgency became more apparent when my West African co facilitator told me that it is now illegal to cut down trees in Ghana for drum making because of mass deforestation. The bad news is that drummers all over the world are unknowingly supporting the destruction of the African jungles, due to the popularity of drum playing. On the one hand it is wonderful that so many people can get together play drums, share the healing and create culture and on the other side it destroys the planet. It took many months of experimenting with different materials and methods to find this drum. Until finally I took old news paper and made a paper pulp that I then used to shape the body of the drum or drum shell. I was overjoyed to find that it was strong enough to hold the tension of the rope, rings and skin. The paper pulp allowed me to create any size or shape drum. To finish it off I created synthetic drum skins that can take any picture or design, and it sounds great when tuned up to the right tension. It is time for us to rethink and reinvent our life on earth from the wheel to the drum in order to realize our full potential as creative beings and the co creators of our destiny.
